Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 14, 2026

KarrotCal ("KarrotCal", "we", "us") is a calorie and macro tracking app operated by KarrotCal. We built KarrotCal to be privacy-first: you don't need an account to use it, and your meal and nutrition data stays on your device. This policy explains what limited information the app touches and why.

The short version. No sign-up, no profile in the cloud. Your meals, photos, and nutrition profile live on your phone. The only data that leaves your device is what's needed to recognize a plate, look up nutrition facts, process a subscription, or send us feedback you chose to send. We never sell your data.

Information stored on your device

The following stays local to your phone and is not uploaded to us:

Uninstalling the app removes this local data from your device.

Information that is processed externally

Camera & meal photos

KarrotCal uses your camera so you can scan your plate. When you scan, the photo is sent over an encrypted connection to our processing service, which runs on Cloudflare Workers and passes the image to an AI provider (Anthropic, and OpenAI in some configurations) to identify the foods in it and estimate their nutrients. We do not store your photos on our servers, we do not use them for advertising, and we do not build a personal profile from them. Typing a meal in by hand sends only the text you wrote.

Nutrition estimates

The calories and macros for a meal come from that same AI service, in the request that identifies the food. We do not send your meals to any third-party nutrition database.

The anonymous device ID

Requests to our processing service carry the anonymous app user ID described under Subscriptions below. We use it for two things: to check whether your subscription is active, and to count requests against a fair-use limit so the service can't be abused. It is not linked to your name or email, and we don't use it to profile you.

Subscriptions & purchases

KarrotCal is free to use, with an optional subscription that removes the daily scan limit (unlimited photo scans). Payments are handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We never see or store your payment card details. We use RevenueCat to manage subscription status. RevenueCat assigns an anonymous app user ID to your device to tell whether your subscription is active; this ID is not linked to your name or email.

Feedback you send us

If you choose to send feedback from within the app, we store your message and a small amount of context to help us understand and reply to it. This is stored in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore) and may include:

Sending feedback is entirely optional.

Notifications

With your permission, KarrotCal can send a daily check-in reminder via your device's notification system. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.

What we don't do

Third-party services

The services above operate under their own privacy policies:

Children

KarrotCal is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country) and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Your choices

Because your data lives on your device, you control it directly: clear it by uninstalling the app, turn off notifications in your device settings, and manage or cancel your subscription through your App Store or Google Play account. If you've sent us feedback and would like it deleted, email us at the address below.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we do, we'll revise the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be reflected in the app or on this page.
